Janie Julien-Fort | L’amorce

Janie Julien-Fort | L’amorce

Opening: Friday, October 12, starting at 5 p.m.
The exhibition will be on display until November 10, 2018.

Occurrence and L’imprimerie, centre d’artistes are happy to present in partnership Janie Julien-Fort’s L’amorce (the starting point) for the Montreal Emerging Photography Award.

What is this project about?
It’s about scrap film. Scrap film and works in progress.

You have a lot of those?
I have boxes and boxes full of them, just waiting for me.

What words do you use when describing your work?
There’s evanescence, disappearance, reappearance, light.
Trace.
Accident.
And then there are words I choose not to use.

And are there things you choose not to show?
Yes. Sometimes you have to give up on certain images that are very important to you.

Why?
Because they don’t fit into the work anymore. I tell stories through what I keep hidden. Often a whole piece will revolve around a single image that I have to take out for the rest to work.

Can these images make it back into the work later?
They can. The exhibition is not the be-all end-all.

Do you feel it’s somehow reductive to put words on your images?
Not at all. It helps me bring them to life.

Biography
Janie Julien-Fort was born in Rouyn-Noranda in 1983. She holds a master’s degree in visual and media arts and a bachelor’s degree in education from Université du Québec à Montréal. Janie Julien-Fort studies photosensitive materials and their specific properties, through images that favour latency over instantaneity, materiality over transparency. He work was showcased in several exhibitions and events in Canada and abroad, like in Paris’ Palais de Tokyo and Berlin’s KW Institute for Contemporary Art during ARTE Video Night, Rencontres internationals de la photographie en Gaspésie, Galerie d’art d’Outremont and in artist-run centres like DARE-DARE, Verticale and l’Écart, lieu d’art actuel. Janie Julien-Fort is represented by la Castiglione gallery.

The text is the result of an interview between the artist and the author Céline Huyghebaert. Photographs were produced at L’Imprimerie, centre d’artistes. The artist would like to thank the Canada Council for the Arts for their financial support, as well as Caroline Boileau, Yann Pocreau, Claire Moeder, Céline Huyghebaert and the wonderful team at L’Imprimerie for their invaluable support throughout every step of the project.

The Montreal Emerging Photography Award, organized by L’imprimerie, centre d’artistes in collaboration with Occurrence Espace d’art et d’essai contemporains, aims to recognize and encourage exceptional work by an emerging artist. L’imprimerie and Occurrence would like to give special thanks to the Conseil des arts de Montréal and Ciel Variable magazine for their precious support.
