A unique project by Montreal artist Frédéric Saia, Façonnage boréal is part of the artist's reflections on ice as a medium. This new installation reproduces the process of erosion within the enclosed space of the gallery. I work first in winter, outdoors. The texture of each successive layer of the ice block varies depending on how cold it is and bears the mark of the weather. The natural element is not a constraint but an ally in my production. Using a technical device, I apply a “know-how” that maintains a degree of “laissez-faire” inherent in the natural process. Raw material, ice already shaped by weather conditions, is transported to the gallery space. Once there, wind or water will sculpt the ice. From solid to liquid, from form to formlessness and vice versa, everything points to transformation and the succession of its various stages, which repeat themselves... like the artist's gesture of taking and reworking what he has observed in nature. With this new installation, Frédéric Saia seeks to point out, emphasize, bring the outside in, and highlight the succession of stages that occur year after year: freezing, thawing, transformations.
Model maker, photographer, sculptor, and environmental artist Frédéric Saia has shown an interest in the Slow Art (Slow Life) movement. His works have been featured in various exhibitions and events in Canada, the United States, and France. He has received awards and grants, which have enabled him to carry out monumental projects that evolve over time and with him. Dormance et persistance, installed at the Clark Gallery in January 2010, is the best example of the direction his practice is taking. His photos have been published in various media here and abroad. Frédéric Saia lives and works in Montreal. He is currently working on a project to integrate art into architecture at the eco-friendly horticultural pavilion at the Institut de technologie agroalimentaire in Sainte-Hyacinthe and will be doing a residency as part of an exchange between the Chambre blanche (Quebec City) and the Rad'art center in Italy in 2013.
