Renée Lavaillante | Au bonheur des galets

À l'initiative d’Occurrence, une monographie sur l'ensemble du travail de Renée Lavaillante paraîtra à l'automne 2015 accompagnée d’un texte de Nathalie Miglioli.
L'interrogation sur la maîtrise attribuée au dessineur se poursuit, avec les galets que je laisse tomber sur mon papier. Ils atterrissent où ils peuvent, et je pars à leur rencontre. La structure de l'image à venir commence là. Tantôt je les ramasse l'un après l'autre, à l'aveugle, en les cherchant du crayon, qui laisse alors ses lignes errantes, ses chemins, tantôt je m’attache à marquer en tons différents les points de leurs chutes successives. Une conjonction de maîtrise et d'aléatoire peut intervenir, avec l'accumulation de lignes serrées, et la fabrique de sortes de « dessins à numéros » superposés.
Salle deux, délaissant les galets, je m'intéresse à des détails incongrus que l'on aperçoit dans la fresque ancienne : les points de jonction des journées de travail, et les dessins sous-jacents, que le temps dévoile parfois. Je cherche, à l’aide de lignes non descriptives, des moyens pour ne montrer que ça.

Renée Lavaillante vit et travaille à Montréal. Elle a présenté à une trentaine d'expositions personnelles au Québec, en France, en Corée du Sud et en Italie, et elle a participé à des expositions de groupe au Québec, en France, en Italie, au Canada, en Grande-Bretagne et en Belgique. En 2014 elle a fait partie de l'exposition « Les matins infidèles, l'art du protocole » au Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec. En 2021, la Maison des arts de Laval lui a consacré une exposition rétrospective : Ruses, œuvres de Renée Lavaillante. Elle a séjourné, comme artiste en résidence, en France et à Rome. Son travail est représenté dans les collections des principaux musées québécois.

The questioning of the mastery attributed to the draftsman continues, with the pebbles I drop onto my paper. They land where they can, and I set off to meet them. This is where the structure of the image to come begins. Sometimes I pick them up one after the other, blindly, searching for them with the pencil, which then leaves its wandering lines, its paths, sometimes I try to mark in different tones the points of their successive falls. A combination of mastery and randomness can intervene, with the accumulation of tight lines, and the creation of a kind of superimposed “numbered drawings”.
Room two, abandoning the pebbles, I'm interested in incongruous details that can be glimpsed in ancient frescoes: the junctions of working days, and the underlying drawings that time sometimes reveals. Using non-descript lines, I'm looking for ways to show just that.

Renée Lavaillante lives and works in Montreal. She has shown in some thirty solo exhibitions in Quebec, France, South Korea and Italy, and has participated in group shows in Quebec, France, Italy, Canada, Great Britain and Belgium. In 2014 she was part of the exhibition “Les matins infidèles, l'art du protocole” at the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec. In 2021, the Maison des arts de Laval devoted a retrospective exhibition to her: Ruses, œuvres de Renée Lavaillante. She has spent time as artist-in-residence in France and Rome. Her work is represented in the collections of major Quebec museums.
