With his graphite and silver pencil drawings, Pierre Przysiezniak explores what we are made of, the nature of our composition. Evolution has refined our biomechanical, perceptual, and cognitive abilities and limitations, possibly even the structures of our imaginations, determining what our eyes can see, how our hands work, and how our brains configure. Our gestures, reflexes, and thoughts are resonances of this engineering of life. Researchers are working on the infinitely small to verify its radiation, density, and organization. Pierre Przysiezniak draws by adjusting with micro and nano-gestures, attempting to mimic, through traces of graphite, the principles of growth and progression in nature. He assumes that ultimately, after the accumulation of all the shifts in meaning, references, and internal images, drifts in intentions, and other “neuronal tropisms”; after all the tiny variations in decisions and technical motivations, coherences beyond the apparent disorder and complexities will emerge.
The finesse of line and intricacy, the slowness of execution, are intended to guarantee fidelity to the structures and patterns of matter, resonances of the organizations and systems that permeate, shape, and surround us. Inspired by new scientific imaginaries, narratives, and vocabularies, his drawings are intended to be “bluesprints” and “probabilistic”: searching through indeterminacies, superimposed states, pluralities, rhizomes of meaning, and permeabilities; choosing and specifying certain elements toward the recognizable, others not, leaving conclusions to the viewer. Transcriptions on an analogical mode of relation to matter: a matter that is inconstant, unstable, impermanent, quantum, like our perceptions, leaping from one point and one concept to another.
Visual artist, craftsman, researcher, and stage designer Pierre Przysiezniak began his career in graphic arts before exhibiting his work at the University of Montreal, Oboro, and Galerie Jolliet in Montreal, as well as in various group exhibitions. He apprenticed as a stage craftsman at the opera before embarking on his own explorations of new scenographic processes. He began his journey into new scenographic writing and design by collaborating on various hybrid creations in dance, image theater, and interdisciplinary arts with director and choreographer Johanne Madore. They co-founded a theater research group to further their explorations. He has been awarded numerous grants (CALQ, CAC, CONACULTA) and residencies (Banff, Hexagram, National Center for the Arts in Mexico City, etc.) in visual arts, intermedia, theater, and dance. He is a lecturer at the École supérieure de théâtre de l'UQÀM and co-founder of the Regroupement Pied Carré. He continues his interdisciplinary creations, supported by his practice of drawing.
