Chez Keisha Scarville, l’image devient un territoire où arpenter les trajectoires diasporiques, plus spécifiquement celles liées à son histoire personnelle et familiale, construite entre les Caraïbes et les États-Unis. Le corpus déjà existant, lick of tongue rub of finger on soft wound, fait ici l’objet d’une interprétation par l’artiste dans le cadre de Constellations. Pensée comme un espace de recontextualisation, la vitrine accueille un travelling latéral entrecoupé par le collage de fragments, de motifs, de gestes et de récurrences, autant de traces de récits discontinus à imaginer et de filiations à tisser. La lisibilité n’en est pas immédiate : elle opère dans un temps plus long qui invite au retour. Alors que les différentes dimensions spatiotemporelles se fondent les unes dans les autres, les images s’occultent et dialoguent, laissant affleurer des latences, des absences. Et dans celles-ci viennent se loger les éclats d’une mémoire en perpétuelle mutation.
Keisha Scarville est née à Brooklyn où elle réside. Son travail a été largement exposé, notamment à l’ICP (New York), à la Huxley-Parlour Gallery (Londres), à l’ICA Philadelphia, au Brooklyn Museum of Art, et à la Webber Gallery (Los Angeles). Ses oeuvres font partie, entre autres, des collections du Brooklyn Museum of Art, du Smithsonian Museum of American Art, de la Yale University Art Gallery et du Museum of Fine Arts Houston. Keisha Scarville est actuellement professeure invitée au Département d’art, de cinéma et d’études visuelles de Harvard et membre du corps professoral de la Parsons School of Design. Le corpus lick of tongue rub of finger on soft wound a d’abord été conçu sous la forme d’un livre publié par MACK. Il figurait parmi les ouvrages présélectionnés pour le Aperture/Paris PhotoBook Award 2023. Son deuxième livre, Passports, a remporté le Prix du Livre d’auteur aux Rencontres d’Arles 2026.

In Keisha Scarville’s work, the image becomes a territory in which to trace diasporic trajectories, more specifically those connected to her personal and family history, shaped between the Caribbean and the United States. The existing body of work, lick of tongue rub of finger on soft wound, is here reinterpreted by the artist as part of Constellations. Conceived as a space of recontextualization, the vitrine features a lateral tracking shot interspersed with a collage of fragments, motifs, gestures, and recurrences—traces of discontinuous narratives to be imagined and lineages to be woven. Legibility is not immediate: it unfolds over a longer period of time, inviting the viewer to return. As the different spatiotemporal dimensions merge into one another, the images obscure each other and engage in a dialogue, allowing latencies and absences to surface. And within these lie the shards of a memory in perpetual mutation.
Keisha Scarville was born in Brooklyn, where she lives. Her work has been widely exhibited, notably at the International Center of Photography (New York City), the Huxley-Parlour Gallery (London), ICA Philadelphia, the Brooklyn Museum of Art, and the Webber Gallery (Los Angeles). Her works are held in, among others, the collections of the Brooklyn Museum of Art, the Smithsonian Museum of American Art, the Yale University Art Gallery, and the Museum of Fine Arts Houston. Keisha Scarville is currently a visiting professor in the Department of Art, Film, and Visual Studies at Harvard and a faculty member at Parsons School of Design. The body of work lick of tongue rub of finger on soft wound was originally conceived as a book, published by MACK. It was shortlisted for the 2023 Aperture/Paris PhotoBook Award. Her second book, Passports, won the Author Book Award at Les Rencontres d’Arles 2026.
