Durant l'été 2013, j'ai visité Causapscal parce que c'était la maison d'enfance d'un ami, le photographe montréalais Jean-François Bérubé. Nous avions tous les deux un meilleur ami qui s’était suicidé et cette expérience partagée fut la motivation derrière ma décision de visiter et de créer des oeuvres à Causapscal. En tant que visiteur de passage extérieur au village, j'ai tenté de recueillir les impressions de l'endroit en sachant que beaucoup de ceux qui y avaient résidés étaient morts de leur propre main. […] Stony Bottom Rocky Point est une série d'observations et d'expériences qui explorent l’équilibre et le rythme alternant, comme des métaphores de la lutte émotionnelle face à ce sujet difficile. En plus du livre d'artiste, l’exposition intègre des photographies, des objets en caoutchouc et de la vidéo. [...]Au cours des dernières années, mes sujets photographiques ont été les surfaces abstraites de moulages que je crée sur des sites spécifiques culturellement chargés. Je choisis des lieux où des incidents traumatisants ont fait la manchette dans les médias. J’y recueille des impressions en utilisant un composé fait de caoutchouc placé sur les façades architecturales, le sol, et les objets, comme une façon de documenter ces sites pour ensuite photographier les surfaces en caoutchouc dans le studio. À Causapscal, j'ai aussi renoué avec des formes plus traditionnelles de la photographie et capturé le paysage avec un appareil photo de 1938 utilisant des pellicules grand format. […]
Nick Kline est né en 1968 à Spring Lake aux États-Unis. Il a reçu son MFA de la Cranbrook Academy of Art, Michigan, en 1992. Ces exposition solo incluent, entre autres : Open Source Gallery, Brooklyn, NY; Momenta Art, Brooklyn; Prosjektrom Normanns, Stavanger, Norvège; Sol Mednick Gallery, Philadelphie; Uno Art Space, Stuttgart, Allemagne et UNTITLED Art Fair à Art Basel, Miami Beach. Une sélection d’expositions de groupe incluent : Allentown Art Museum, Allentown, Pennsylvanie, Minnesota Centre for Photography, Minneapolis, MN et Smack Mellon Studios, Brooklyn. En 2011, Kline était récipiendaire du Emergency Grant Award, décerné par la Fondation pour l'art contemporain, New York. En 2012, son livre d’artiste " Sorry You’re Here, " était finaliste pour le National Book of the Year Award, decerné par NATT et DAG Magazine, Norvège. Ses livres d’artiste sont disponibles à Printed Matter, New York et font parties de plusieurs collections permanentes, dont The Museum of Modern Art, New York, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Artexte et The Banff Centre. Le travail de Kline a fait l’objet de critiques, notamment dans le New York Times, The New Yorker, The Philadelphia Inquirer, Time-Out NY, Le PhotoReview, Frankfurter Rundschau Magazine. En 2014-2015, Kline exposera au S & J Projets, New York et à Another Space, Copenhague, Danemark. Il entamera aussi une résidence d’artiste au Centre d'Art Contemporain de Prague en République tchèque. Kline vit et travaille à New York. Il est professeur adjoint au département Arts, Culture et Médias à l'Université Rutgers - Newark. L’artiste est représenté par De La Cruz Projects, San Jose, Costa Rica.

In the summer of 2013, I visited Causapscal because it was the childhood home of a friend, Montreal photographer Jean-François Bérubé. We both had a best friend who had committed suicide, and this shared experience was the motivation behind my decision to visit and create work in Causapscal. As a visitor from outside the village, I tried to gather impressions of the place, knowing that many of those who had lived there had died by their own hand. [...] Stony Bottom Rocky Point is a series of observations and experiences that explore alternating balance and rhythm, as metaphors for the emotional struggle with this difficult subject. In addition to the artist's book, the exhibition includes photographs, rubber objects and video. [...]In recent years, my photographic subjects have been the abstract surfaces of casts I create at specific culturally charged sites. I choose places where traumatic incidents have made headlines in the media. I collect impressions using a rubber compound placed on architectural facades, floors and objects, as a way of documenting these sites and then photographing the rubber surfaces in the studio. In Causapscal, I also returned to more traditional forms of photography, capturing the landscape with a 1938 camera using large-format film. [...]
Nick Kline was born in Spring Lake, USA, in 1968. He received his MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art, Michigan, in 1992.
